Summer 2008
UNCW and the Cameron School of Business continue to make headlines
and gain recognition for the solid education and foundation we create
for our students. From Don Kohn to Barack Obama, the university is
in the forefront of discussions that impact our economy and our future.
Kohn, vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, was one of
two keynote speakers for our 26th annual Business Week along with one
of our very own, David Cole, president of The Warranty Group. We also
took this opportunity to honor David along with Herb McKim, executive
vice president of McKim and Creed, and
David Congdon, CEO of Old
Dominion Freight Line, as our Alumni of the Year. The UNCW Alumni
Association selected another one of our grads, Bill Mayew, as the Young
Alumnus of the Year – another great success story from Cameron!
I have the pleasure to meet regularly with the presidents of the Cameron student clubs and organizations which form the Cameron Student Advisory Council. The council, this year led by Emily Nolan, provides important feedback on what we can do to further enrich the learning experience of our students. It is also a means to support and/or celebrate student extra-curricular successes, such as Cameron Gives Back (helping three charities), building a Habitat for Humanity house, participating on the Cameron Ethics Bowl team, raising more than $53,000 with Wing Fling, winning regional chapter competitions and preparing tax returns at inner-city Wilmington churches. These powerful learning opportunities, supported by great faculty advisors, are further enhanced by the activities of our Cameron Executive Network.
This was a sad year for Cameron because of the passing of Claude Farrell, long-time professor of economics. Claude was truly unique – at nearly every alumni event I attend I can expect to hear “Claude stories.”
Looking forward, we successfully completed six hires for 2007-08, increasing our full-time faculty to 70. We also selected four faculty members to receive recognition as Faculty Fellows, another way to support our faculty.
A systemwide initiative, UNC Tomorrow, began in earnest this spring.
Perhaps the most exciting proposed Cameron initiative is the Center for
Entrepreneurship and Emerging Ventures. This fall we will begin offering
undergraduate coursework at Coastal Carolina Community College.
Looking further forward, we expect to build upon the on-going work of
a Cameron faculty team at the North Carolina State Port towards a future
institute or center focused on logistics, transportation and trade.
We continue to look for opportunities for our alums to remain involved
with Cameron. It is critical for us to further develop our Cameron
alumni chapter to give us input into events, activities and forms of
communication going forward. As always, we welcome your comments
and ideas. I can be reached at clarkl@uncw.edu or 910.962.7672. Thank you for your
ongoing commitment to the school and our students.
