UNCW's Cyber Defense Team Participates in the 2014 SECCD Competition

The UNCW's Cyber Defense Team (CDC) once again participated in the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (SECCDC) this year. The Cyber Defense Team is a combination of IS, CS and MS CSIS students. Their ability to participate in this competition comes from the hard work, determination and excellent team dynamic of the following students:

Credit Suisse

The UNCW Cyber Defense team was supported by Credit Suisse, who helped fund the attendance of the CDC in the Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. This year the team's performance was judged by Greg Oldham, of Cape Fear Technical Consulting and Founder of Port City Hackerspace, and Dan Wuensch, of New Potato Technologies.

SECCDC was sponsored by: Homeland Security, Deloitte, Dell Secure Works, metasploit, netscout, coresecurity and hp.

UNCW's Cyber Defense Team Wins Second Place in 2013!

We are proud to announce that UNCW's Cyber Defense Team (CDC) received the trophy for the second place at the 2013 Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (SECCDC)! The Cyber Defense Team is a combination of IS, CS and MS CSIS students. This outstanding performance is achieved by hard work, determination and excellent team dynamic of the following students:

For 3 days, participating teams were given the task of securing several systems while they were bombarded with business injections and were under attack by hackers (the red team). Their scores were based on how they performed against the hacking attempts of the red team, how many services they had running and how they handled the business injections during the competition. They were probably given one month worth of IT tasks to be completed in a couple of days. The team prepared for this event relentlessly working and learning together completely outside of their full time academic schedule. Each member probably spent on average 15 hours per week outside the classroom for preparation efforts for at least the past couple of months. Advisors include Dr. Clark, Dr. Vetter and Matt Bohme (GE-Hitachi).

SECCDC was sponsored by: Homeland Security, Deloitte, Dell Secure Works, metasploit, netscout, coresecurity and hp. After the competition, our students were approached by these recruiters and were invited to apply to their cyber security positions!

Student Organizations

Cyber Defense Club

The purpose of the UNCW Cyber Defense Club is twofold. First, it aims to provide an educational venue in which students can learn critical knowledge and skills needed to administer and defend computer networks and systems, and gives the opportunity to apply the theory and skills that students acquired in their information systems and computer science course work. Second, UNCW Cyber Defense Club will be joining the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), which challenges students to defend network services against attacks by professional penetration testers. UNCW Cyber Defense Club will use the Regional and National Collegiate Cyber Security Competition (CCSC) competition as a metric of University of North Carolina Wilmington expertise maturation.
