CSB’s Top 5 Tips for a Great Internship

1. Know Before You GO: Explore the career field you are interested in. Know why you want an internship. Define your goals, priorities & what you want to learn in your internship.

2. Start Early: For a Summer internship you need to start looking & applying NOW! For a Fall internship you need to start looking now and applying in April/May.  The earlier you start looking the more successful you will be!

3. Use Your Network: Talk to your family, friends, co-workers, professors & advisors, tell them that you are looking for an internship.  Always ask if your contact knows of anyone who they could refer you too. Up to 80% of jobs are never advertised, so your network and networking is a key component of success!

4. Update Your Resume: Make sure it is perfect! Utilize the Career Center, professors, your CEN Mentor, relatives & friends. The more eyes that see your resume the stronger your resume will be. Don’t send the same resume to every position you apply to, make sure your resume is relevant to the position you are applying for

5. Be Persistent (but polite): If you submit an application and don’t hear back within a few days, follow up with a phone call.   Employers are busy and you need to make yourself stand out from other applicants.
